The security tab is not appearing for any files/folder properties in XP pro.
Have made sure the 'Display simple folder view' checkbox is unchecked, any
firewall/antivirus are disabled and the account being used is a member of
ther administrators group. Machine is a VAIO laptop with a single drive with
two partitions both NTFS formatted, XP pro installed on one partition with
the other used for data.

I have never experienced this problem before and cannot find help anywhere
does anyone have any suggestions?

You need to turn off simple file sharing.
In explorer: tools, folder options, view tab, uncheck: use simple file
sharing. Ok out.
Now the security tab will show.

Only thing I can think of is that at the top level (ie properties of the
whole drive in My Computer the Security permissions have been changed,
in Advanced, so as to prevent you having Full control - and hence has
inhibited 'Change Permissions'- with the setting propagated down. I
would try logging in as the Reserve account called explicitly
Administrator (after hitting CTL-ALT-DEL twice at Welcome to get the old
style logon screen), and investigate from that

Unfortunately I have already tried that and there is no security tab for the
adminisrator account either. Tried files, folders and drive properties.

The problem is this box is unchecked as I mentioned in the original post, it
was the only article on the microsoft knowledgebase that I could find.
However the box was already unchecked, I did try checking the box applying
the change then unchecking the box and applying again. Alas no joy...

In your original post you said you unchecked the '"Display simple folder
view". This is not the correct setting. The correct one is "Use simple file
sharing". It is located at the very bottom of the list under the view tab
and it has to be unchecked. What you said you unchecked has nothing to do
with the security tab. Re-read my earlier post for the correct steps to the
correct option.
