NTFS Security Tab

H

help

I have Windows XP Professional installed on one laptop with SP1 put on. All
parititons have NTFS, and I have a Security Tab to set Security for
accessing the folders/files for different users/security groups, just as for
windows 2000 and WinNT4.

I have recently installed another laptop using the Windows XP Professional
with SP1a. when I installed Windows XP, the windows parition was formatted
as NTFS by the setup programs, although there are other FAT32 parittions
around. Now that even though all except the Primary DOS Partition (which
has DOS6.2.1 installed) is NTFS, I only get a "Sharing" tab and no Security
tab!! How could I get this back??

Just to clarify, all I get now is a sharing tab that lets me set "Local
Sharing" and "Networking Sharing".

I can't specify ACL and permission for shares, nor could I specify which
users/security-groups have permissions on files/folders once logged on!

In Windows Explorer Tools|Folder Options|View tab|Uncheck Use simple file
sharing|Apply|OK

But that does not explain why I don't get the *Security* tab which is used
for setting the ACL for people who log on to the machine locally (as opposed
to via a file share)?

On my laptop, I have Windows Explorer Tools|Folder Options|View tab|Use
simple file Sharing- Ticked, and I still have the Security Tab, as per
windows 2000, Win NT4!

How to disable simplified sharing and set permissions on a shared folder in
Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307874

From that article:
If simple file sharing is enabled, you see the simple file sharing user
interface rather than the classic Security and Sharing tabs. By default,
this new user interface is implemented in Windows XP Home Edition and in
Windows XP Professional if you are working in a workgroup. If you disable
simple file sharing, the classic Security and Sharing tabs appear, and you
can specify which users and groups have access to shared folders on your
computer.

Good Luck!

In Folder Options - View, uncheck 'Use simple file sharing'
