security settings prohit running ActiveX controls -- from Windows Update page

I'm getting the familiar "Your current security settings
prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page." message
when trying to scan for Window Updates. This is a recent
phenomenon; I've been able to load updates a few weeks
ago. I get the same ActiveX failure on many other sites
as well. I've checked and reset all the usual security
settings (Tools/Internet Options.../Security/Custom
Levels.../Enable Download signed ActiveX controls, etc.).

I've seen lots of other postings on this topic on various
sites, but no real solutions. I'm running XP, IE 6 SP1.
I've tried reinstalling IE6, but this doesn't seem to want
to install on XP.

Could really use some help here. Thanks.

You sound like a much more sophisticated user than I am &
perhaps already did this, but did you check that your IE
cipher strength = 128? (IE/Help/About) Since you're
already running SP1 I don't know what you're up against
in trying to fix it if this is indeed the problem.
Installing SP1a completely cleared up my problem with
secure sites, but I didn't have either SP previously and
MS specifically advises against installing SP1a if you
already have SP1. Maybe reinstalling SP1? Everybody's
security problem seems to have started a few weeks ago. ?
