security patch wont install

this is a crock of @X#& as far as tech support goes, cause
i will NEVER find any of the replies... even if there is a
solution to my problem...

i have, using windows update, installed the June 2003,
Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (818529)about SIX
times, all of them report to be successful. HOWEVER, every
time i run windows update, i am told i need to install
June 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer
(818529). i have searched my computer for the files that
are supposed to be installed with this patch, and i found
them all... but they arent the correct versions! i tried
renaming them (so i could AGAIN reinstall June 2003,
Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (818529)) hoping to
get the correct version of these files, but i CANT do
this, because they are in use by windows. i cant DELETE
these files, either, for the same reason.

right now, i am pretty angry with microsoft. i have bought
their products for years, and never received ANY USEFUL
support. all i get is direction to these boards, which i
can never find again. i have about 100 of these in
my "favorites" and i dont have months to go through them
one at a time to figure out what they were, or what my
post was, or where it is. one reason i have not bought
windows xp is because of this crappy version of "tech
support". when i pay $100 for an operating system, it
would be nice to be able to find out why it crashes during
a clean install, but i will never find that answer either.
the version of windows i am now using is windows me, which
has no option of going to a DOS environment and renaming
or deleting these files there. i swear, if i cant get some
answers, i am GOING to remove all this crap, and either go
back to win 3.1 (i still have the floppies!) or go to
linux! this is the kind of support i would expect from
freeware or a used car dealer, not from a prime operating
system like windows!

Go ahead. Your first paragraph (which I quoted) implied that you didn't
know how to find the replies.

Try this:
Windows Update Troubleshooter
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Also, try this newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windowsupdate
Microsoft employees often answer questions in that newsgroup.

This is not Microsoft tech support. I doubt anyone from Microsoft ever
answers any of these questions. These forums are for windows users who help
each other voluntarily. So be grateful if somebody answers your questions.
If you behave badly, nobody wants to help you.

But your problems. If that hotfix is visible on control panel -> add or
remove programs, try to install it. If it isn't, you could try to remove the
incorrect files. It's true that you cannot delete them from explorer,
because they are in use. But files that are in use can be renamed. Not from
explorer but from command prompt. So to rename locked file, open command
prompt and find the locked files. Then use "ren" command to rename the file.
For example "ren locked.fil locked.fil.tmp". After reboot that
locked.fil.tmp is no more locked and can be deleted. But be warned that if
you just rename importat file this way and don't copy new file to replace
it, you migth get big problems when rebooting. Also if locked file happens
to be critical system file, there is backup copy in
\windows\system32\dllcache. To replace these file successfully, you must
replace that backup copy also. Or it might be enough to replace that backup.
I'm not sure.
