Security padlock icon doesn't appear

I am running XP home version on a pc and laptop. On both machines, the
security padlock icon never appears on the taskbar when I am in a secure
site. How can I get it to appear? Thanks.

It's not supposed to appear in the taskbar - it appears in the status bar of
your IE window (next to the name of the security zone you're in)
