Security Essentials will not install

I have tried installing several times and did a second download and tried
installing it from that. It just won't install. I get the opening "wizard"
window and then a message that it will not install. It is the standard MS
"... encountered a problem..." pop-up, with an error report option.

I'm running XP Pro SP3, on a VM [VMware Fusion]. All other MS programs run
fine in this environment. IE, OFFICE, Paint, etc.
