second hard drive

I have installed a second hard drive. The system
recognizes the drive in device manager but no drive letter
is assigned. It may not be formatted. Any thoughts on
how I format the drive and get the system to assign a
drive letter?

Thanks in advance,
Kim

Undoubtedly the drive is not formatted, particularly if it is new. That will
be why no drive letter is shown.
Go to the web site of the new drive manufacturer and they are sure to have a
downloadable installation utility that will format and install the drive,
probably giving you the options of installing it either as a back-up or as a
replacement primary drive. During installation, the appropriate files will
be copied from your current drive to the new one.

Right click on My Computer, left click Manage. Under Storage click Disk
Management. Left click on the drive in question and you will be able to
partition and format it.

When you install a new drive, you need to install one or more
partitions, then format them. You won't see "drive letters" until you
create partitions, since those letters are assigned to partitions, not
drives. Once you create partitions you'll see letters, but you'll have
to format the partition before you use it.

Use XP's disk tools. I think they are under
Programs|Accessories|System Tools. (I'm at work and my employer
doesn't allow us access to those functions, so I can't see them on my
computer.)
