Second h/drive performance

120gb drive on 1st IDE channel set as Cable select & dvd writer on 2nd IDE
channel set as CS. Fitting 2nd 120GB HD degrades Ist HD down to 16mbit/sec
from 25mbit/sec & the new HD to 3mbit/sec( similar result using CS on both
or Master/slave config). Similar results on second IDE channel. The new drive
read/writes @ 26mbit/sec when as master on 2nd IDE. I need better performance
for video capture, any ideas please.
(The master is at the end of the IDE cable with slave in the middle!)

Generally do not mix hdd and optical drives on same cable. Therefore:

IDE 1 - Master (hdd with O/S on it)
- Slave (hdd for data storage, video capture)

IDE 2 - Master (Optical Drive)

Are you using a 40 pin / 80 wire IDE cable for your hdd's? If you are
already using a 40/80 cable then consider that the cable may be bad and
replace it. CS on both hdd's should work if the Master (with O/S) is
connected on the end, and the Slave in the middle (The blue connector goes
on the IDE1 connector on the motherboard).

You could try setting the Master hdd to "master dual" and the Slave hdd to
"slave" on the back of the drives to see if that makes a difference.

Are both your hdd's 7200 RPM drives? (Probably if they are 120 GB)

Hi,

16mbit/sec?
Are you meaning 16MB/sec or 16 mega bytes/sec?
First, make sure you are using 40Pin 80Wire flat ribbon cable for the Hdds
and optical drives.
Secondly, connect the Hdds to Primary IDE channel and the optical drives to
secondary IDE channel.
Thirdly, all the Hdds and optical drives are set to cable select (CS) and
the fastest drive should always connected as master and the slower drive
connected as slave.
e.g. CD/DVD rom are usually faster than CD/RW or DVD/RW, for HDDs, ATA133 is
faster than ATA 100.
At last, make sure DMA mode are enabled in BIOS for both IDE channels. You
can verify the UDMA mode for all the drives in device manager.

Hi,
I meant Mega bytes/sec, slip of the keys. Anyway all is resolved as you
suggested the bios was the culprit I thought as the drive was working the
bios had sorted it. I'll know better next time. Thanks for your help.
