Search: Windows encounters "problem"

I am running Windows XP. On my laptop--hp pavilion ze4400--
(but not desktop), when I run a Search, I get the
dialogue box, "Windows has encountered a problem and must
close down." I click to run the report, then all shuts
down. I last successfully ran a Search about 10 days ago.
I have been trying unsuccessfully to run a Search for the
past 3 days. I have tried the Restore feature, but Search
still does not work.

How can I correct the Search feature?
