Search Pop-up

I keep getting a search pop-up when I go to certain
websites, however without pattern as to which site it will
occur. An example of 2 sites are a financial news site
called briefing.com and a movie review site. The search
pop-up has this URL http://error.99fh.com/error.html If I
close out the pop-up it just comes right back if I change
web pages. I have run Spybot with no help. This is more
than annoying. I have searched the registry for the pop-
up site to no avail. Any suggestions would be
appreciated. Any idea on my computer or the registry where
to look. I even tried deleting and copying over the
index.dat file in the history folder and cookies folder
but windows will not allow me to do so. It says it is a
file in use and with a user-mapped section open?. How can
I get around Windows and delete this file or copy it
over. I am running Windows 2000 Pro. Thanks in Advance

Try http://toolbar.google.com to stop IE popups. Also make sure you have a
firewall between your computer/network and the Internet to prevent Messenger
Spam (and all the other unwanted visitors you'll have without one)

Did you also try AdAware? You can run both Spybot and AdAware on the same
computer with no problems - just make sure you update them before scanning.

Deleting the index.dat files is unlikely to help with your popup problem,
but if you want to do it anyway, the easiest way is to set up another user
with administrator privileges, log on as that user, and delete the problem
files. I do that every now and then as a housekeeping measure.

How do I set up another user. Can you direct me
somewhere. When I originally installed Windows I only set
up the Administator as the user. Also I am assuming if you
delete these files new one are created. Thank You.

Press the WinKey+F1, Look up "User", Select Accounts, adding, follow
instructions in right-hand window.

Three things:

1) Switch to Mozilla Thunderbird. It's faster then IE, has integrated
pop-up blocker, tabbed browsing, etc., etc., etc...

2) If you know of a location that spyware is known to create a
directory, remove all the files in that directory but *not* the
directory. Now, edit the permissions for that directory and Deny
Full-Control to Everyone and System (I'm not sure if System is
considered an "Everyone" so System might not be necessary).

3) Create a regular user account that is not a member of the
Administrator group. Microsoft was smart when they designed Windows NT+
(Especially starting with Windows 2000) because of its powerful
permission control system. It might be more of a hassle to manage
certain aspects of your system when you're not always an administrator
(you have to log out of the computer as a regular user and log in as an
administrator) but it makes the OS a heck of a lot more secure. You
can't break something you don't have access to touch :). Administrator
accounts should be used for just that, administration.

Hope that helps,

Sean

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Users and Passwords > Add button.
Don't mess with the existing user; just add a new one and put it in the
Administrators group.

Yes, the index.dat and other files are re-created as needed.

I created a new account call it G. When lodded in as the
administrator I see the folders Adminstrator, All users,
Defauclt User and G. When logged in as G I see
Administrator, All Users and G. When logged in as Admin. I
see everything. When logged in as G (I set it up as part
of Administrators only) I do not see all the programs and
as an example when I go to open Internet Explorer I prompt
me to set up the account. As such I do not see the
Original Index.dat files in the Administrator Folder. I
thought I would see all that I did when logged in as the
Administrator though not have full access unless I was
part of the Admin group, which I am. Is ther more I need
to do.

Thanks in Advance.

Hard telling how you are looking but Since you have a New profile your
have default settings for Viewing directories and that means hidden and
system files are hidden. So go to Tools, Folder Options, View, and chang
the settings so you may see them. As far as not seeing All the programs
if you are talking about the start menu then it's because the shortcuts
only exist in the Administrators "Start Menu" instead of having been
placed in All Users "Start Menu". If you move them then All Users will
see them in their Start menu.

Thanks, An example is that after I set up a new user and
log on as such If I click on IE it prompts me to set up an
account. When one is already set up. The same for my
dialer to the internet. Is this how it works. I am new
to setting up additinal users.

To set up another user, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Users and
Passwords and click the Add button. Follow through the setup the wizard
and when you get to the last panel, select Other and Administrators for
level of access.
