I can no longer do a file search from the start menu.
the search window that opens looks different and not operational.

H Richard K Mahan,
Follow the following steps

Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install. This
reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses.
NOTE: You may need your Windows XP CD-ROM to finish installing Search
Companion

if that does not fix the issue try the following

1/ Click the Start button

2/ From the Start menu click Run

3/ In the Run dialogue box type: regsvr32 jscript.dll and click OK

4/ Click OK again

5/ Follow steps 1 , 2 and 3 again to register the following files

// vbscript.dll
// urlmon.dll

Thanks, Muzafar I can't find the srchasst.inf file on my system. Ichecked the
system32
folder and the file is missing. is there a place where I can download the
file?

search the file under c:\windows\inf not system32

reinstall search

open the command prompt,copy and paste in

start->run->inf(it will automatically open the inf folder)

press enter

Locate the Srchasst.inf file. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then
click Install.

if fails

try sfc /scannow

->start->rum->cmd- ok

type sfc /scannow and press enter

Muzafar
