When I try to find files using the search feature it locks up my computer. I have to do ALT,CTL,DEL to end the task and it tells me the program is not responding. I used to be able to use this feature and now it won't work. Does anyone know what would cause this to occur and how I can get that feature working again. I use it alot to locate files and I really need that feature. Thanks.

Where is the error scan in XP Pro? When I choose analyze in the disk defragmenter it tells me defragmenting is not needed.

Right click the drive..properties..tools tab and click the button
under error checking.

Hi,

To reinstall search,
go to Start > Run and copy and paste the following line to the window:

rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
%systemroot%\inf\srchasst.inf

(this is only one line, separated by a space)

You will need to put the XP CD in the CD ROM

Hope this helps.

| I did the error scan and defrag and it still does not work. It doesn't
even attempt to search anything it just sits there locked up. Is there any
way to call Microsoft support?

This happend to the Start -> Search or folder/right-click/Search of the
Administrator account of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. The other admin account
search worked fine. When search is clicked, the Task Bar shows the hour glass
indefinitely. When shutdown is selected from the Task Manager it says the
explorer.exe isn't responding.

This fixed my problem, without reinstalling or rebooting. Start -> Control
Panel -> Administrative tools -> Services -> Indexing Service, Startup type from
Manual to Disabled. It was currently stopped.

I tried this on my machine and it didn't work. I have SP2 on my machine.
Could this be the cause of the problem? USing search from My Computer works
fine but going Start>Search just locks up explorer.exe.
