John Kron

HI, i am getting "the file that is required to run Search
Companion cannot be found error" when I try to go start
then search. I have attempted every known fix to remedy it.
I tried the Q319949 download (which would install cause it
said i have a newer updatae already). I have saved the HKEY
fixes and followed the prompts , . They installed ok
itseems but did not fix the problem. I have tried the
Microsoft remedy manually to try and restore from
msgconfig, but microsoft did not give the names of the
files to restore in there instructions, or where to find
the files at. Both pieces of information are needed to
complete the microsoft fix. Apparently it is thier huge
latest xp update that screwed it up in the first place.
they should know what files need to be restored imo.
Nothing has worked. I even tried power toys tweakui and
couldn't make that work either. I was supposed to put a
check box in the search option on the desktop branch. but
mine had no search option to check . (sigh). thx in
advance. PS please tell microsoft that a little common
sense instructions in plane english ,would go a long way
when giving instructions about computers. thx again john k

Hi John,

Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab, set it to "Show hidden
files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files
[recommended]". Also uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

Then, open Windows Explorer from Start/All Programs and go to the
C:\Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file, right-click it and
choose install.

You may need to either insert your WinXP CD or know where your I386 folder
is located on the hard drive. You may also need to know where the
\ServicePackFiles folder is (usually under the Windows directory).

Hi John,

It just means that you probably have "hide file extensions for known file
types" enabled in folder options. Just disable it to see the extension. You
can also click start/run, type C:\Windows\Inf\srchasst.inf and click ok to
begin.

Hi,

No, they are not the same. However, you will probably find an I386 folder
hidden under the C:\Windows directory, and this contains all the files you
need. This is common with systems that are preinstalled.

Rick, thx again (gaining ground thx to your brain) I was
able to find the i386 file right where you said it would
be. And the install seemed to follow though without a
hitch. However it did not correct the problem. I still get

search companion cannot be found etc.. What would you
suggest for me to do now , (that doesn't involve jumping in
a lake or playing on a highway..) thx in advance

good morning Rick, thx for your response again, it is very
appreciated. I did attempt to use the solutions in kells
korner before i ever went to the ms newsgroup. Nothing
there was a solution. The downloadable fix was
uninstallable due to my "newer" version of a ms update.
it seems that my situation is one that fell through the
cracks of ms fixes. I will just keep searching for
solutions . If you have any other suggestions then feel
free to respond. Also if you have an inside ear to
microsoft please let them know that their posted fixes do
not fix the problem in some situations . thx very much for
all of lyour time. god bless
