Is there an limit , to the number of levels you can have in an directory
structure, when performing a search. Also I was wondering what else could
prevent Serach Companion from finding a file other than the file being
corrupted.

Not knowing what you searched for or the criteria, The simplest is the
file not named what you remember, next is searching for text in files
that aren't set to be recognized as text files and XP skips them.

One solution is to use Agent Ransack, which you may get from the authors
web site.

Bob, The problem I having involves a laptop running Windows XP SP 2. When
one of my users run Search Compaion, to locate some very old files on are
network that are at least level down it does not find the files at all.

A level down from where, the starting location? What search criteria for
the files are being used, is search subfolders set to on? etc.

I'll repeat my suggestion to use Agent Ransack ( I've no intrest in the
program other than it works and is fast)

The Maximum length of a file path, including the filename and extension
is 260 characters in 32bit Windows. If your network share including UNC
path is longer than that, the files will be unsearchable and unopenable.

example:

\\servername\share\users\fredbloggs\My Documents\private stuff\Web
Clients\Microsoft Office\Outlook\Templates\New Mailing List\Monthly
Roundup\November\I'm Making This Up\But This is an\example of a path
that is too long\for\Windows XP\to Run or Search\summary.doc

This file will be viewable in explorer, but can't be opened or be
searched for.

A solution is to share a folder further down the path and then search
from there.
