Search Button does not work or hangs XP System

When i try to use the search for files button on Windows
Explorer, the PC hangs for a a long time, and finally it
shows an empty gray screen on the left side.
Does anyone know how to recover this SEARCH funtion
without having to re-install Windows XP ??
