Windows search function

Currently running WindowsXP with service pack 2. I just noticed when
selecting SEARCH from the start menu, the hourglass appears then the system
hangs and never gets into the search function. The clock will stand still
also. I can open anything on the desktop but clicking on START button does
nothing. It will not recover on its own. Upon reboot all other programs seem
to operate normally until I try to SEARCH for something.

Looking at the task manager shows no other apps running. I have scanned the
harddrives several times for virus, trojan, malware activity and found none.
What can be causing this ?
Thanks in advance........

I'M HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AS YOU. Have you been able to fix it . I haven't
found the answer yet. Please reply if you do. Thanks, zommer

Thanks for the reply. I wish I had good news. There are a few similiar
problems posted in "Windows xp general" or "basic". Nothing there helped me
though. After two weeks with no responses, I elected to reload xp. I had also
lost the ability to run any .exe file as well as access the task manager.
Seriously thinking about going back to Linux.

Good Luck
