Seagate Harddisk Not detected

I have a compaq EVO Machine I am trying to add a 40GB
Seagate hardisk.

I set the jumpers to Slave and Boot the Computer. Welcome
screen hangs and I cant even go to BIOS to check if the
HDD has been detected.

When I remove the disk it functions ok.

Is this a HDD Damage ( I thought these HDDs are not that
too fragile). If so can I recover it. This is just a 6
month old HDD.

You must have a cable or jumper problem. Make sure the cable and jumpers are
correct for the location and type. This is not a XP problem as XP has not
loaded at this point.

Check that you have got the ribbon connectors going to the correct drives.
The ribbon also can have master/slave connectors (swith them round if in
doubt and try it)

It is sometimes best to have the jumbers set to auto detect rather than
specifically setting to a master/slave jumper setting.

Some master hard drive have a master only jumper setting.
Also check if the master is set to cable select.
Sometimes hard drives from different companies don't get along, try putting
the drive on the CD-ROM cable.

The jumper in the original disk may be set to "only." If that's
the case and you add a slave, you have to change it to "master."
