cant detect pri hdd

My hdd crash and try to install the xp into a new hdd. However, the pc does
not seems to detect it when set as pri master with the cd rom as secondary
master. However, when attached as pri slave, it can detect it. The bios is
set as auto for all the pri/sec master/slaves. Change the cable but to no
avail. Any idea why this is so?

Your question has nothing to do with Windows XP. Best
to repost it in a hardware group.

Check the hardware jumper on the new drive. Some have to be set as
Master/Only, some possibly to CS (cable select). (You may need to visit the
manuf's site for info on the drive.)

If those are the only ide units in your computer, and both are on the
same cable, set the hd as primary master and cd rom as primary slave. Ought
to fly ok then. Your post mentioned only ONE cable, so I only told you how
to configure 2 drives using one cable. If you have more drives and/or
cables, tell us about them & we will direct you properly. (With only 2
drives & ONE CABLE, you can't have hd detected as pri. slave w/o something
else as pri. master. Sounds like your cd rom is set as pri. master for hd
to be seen as pri. slave. If so, this needs to be changed! Reverse them!)
HTH & good luck. s

What is "pri slave" and what is 2nd "it" when "when attached as pri slave,
it can detect it."
