When I attached 2nd hdd (pri slave WD) on the same IDE cable as the1st hdd (
pri master, WD) and when I open "my computer". it does not show the 2nd hdd

However in the device manager and disk management, both of them show the
presence of the 2 hdd in the pc.

Any corrective action for this or is it thAt my 2nd hdd is spoilt, thanks

Has the 2nd hard drive been formatted?

Use Disk Management and check the layout bar of the disk.
If it shows "Unallocated", then the disk has no structures on it.
(Volumes or Partitions). If that's the case then you need to do
both a create partition and format. Is the 2nd drive new and
empty ?

In Disk Management, it shows:
(c) partition basic ntfs healthy (system) 74gb 71
gb
Datadrive partition basic fat32 healthy (active) 5.109 gb 5.09
gb

in short, they are formatted and shows empty, but it shows shows up in "my
computer' isnt it? Thanks

Further to my earlier reply, I just noticed that in the disk management, the
diagram below the page says Disk 1 show as 37.2 gb which is also the same
37.2 (inside the box), That should be the correct capacity as my 2nd hdd is
40 gb.

So whatever shown under "datadrive partition basic fat32 healthy (active)
5.09 gb 5.09 gb" is wrongly reported or detected by the pc (no mistake in
my reading the figures as what is shown on the monitor),

so there is something wrong with the detection/reporting. By the way, this
is a fresh clean installation of xp (with no other installation except
antivirus) and brand new hdd. Look forward to solve this with your help.
thanks

No. What capacity has the second drive?

Make sure that both drives are jumpered correctly (master with slave and
slave) and ensure that both drives appear correctly in the BIOS-Setup.
Also, do not forget to connect both power supply and the ribbon cable.

The 2nd hdd is 40gb and both have only 1 partition and are both primary. Both
are WD hdd. Jumpers are set correctly, 1st hdd, master middle jumper while
2nd hdd pri slave, jmper at 4th slot from pin1. In fact when I took out
jumper of 2nd hdd, pc would not boot up and ask to boot from cd.If I put at
jumper at 2nd slot, it also cannot boot up and askinfg to boot from cd.

To answer Doug and Krmal question (sorry just saw my earlier post which I
thought I lost it and thats why I repost), in disk management, I cannot
assign a letter to the drive. When I right click the bottom box, all grey out
except 'delete partition' and "help' thanks

I've had instances of WD drives not working together with "Traditional"
jumpering. You might want to use CS (Cable Select) on both. Using an
80-pin cable The standardized color code for connections is:
Blue connector to Motherboard IDE channel
Gray connector to your preferred "Slave" Device
Black connects to your preferred "Master" Device
Also, might want to try a different IDE cable if you have a spare.

You may want to follow R. McCarty's advice. If this doesn't help, the
drive *might* be defective. I remember similar problems with a brandnew
drive in another newsgroup. After replacing the drive, the problem has
been resolved.

Both on cable select and using the std colour code for connection, its the
same situation, discrepancy in reporting the size on top and bottom of the
disk management. Dont have a spare 80pin cable.

Addendum: You may also want to run the second drive as master, connected
to the *second* IDE channel.

Tried on another 80 pin cable - still same situation.

Just a thought, if I put 2nd hdd as master on second IDE cable, and if it
works, where am I going to put the cd rom secondarly slave??? Thanks for your
idea.

Dan, this may be irrelevant but I noticed a couple of things.

First of all the drive showing properly seems to be formatted in NTFS, the
other in FAT, was this intentional?

Second it is possible to have only one partition on a drive but that does
not mean the partition will automatically be the whole capacity of the
drive, is it possible the partition was wrongly created at 5Gb?
This leads me to ask what software was used to create the partition and
format it?

Third, as someone has pointed out there is nothing to say a brand new drive
can't be faulty, in fact I stopped buying WD drives 4 years ago because I
found not only were "Some" faulty but actually "Most" were faulty, with a
life expectancy of less than 6 months. On the other hand they were cheap.
WD's way of getting their customers to do their quality control work I
suspect. I have not had trouble with any other brand.

What you could try doing is a repartition / reformat, either from within XP
or using something else, otherwise I think I'd be taking it back to the
store.

Just a couple of ideas, I cannot otherwise explain your problem.

Charlie

That doesn't really matter. You may either want to run the CD-ROM device
as slave at the first IDE controller or at the second IDE controller.

Have you ever looked inside of a case?
