Maybe there's a loose connection or the
drive could need replacing.

Might be worth a try to go to Device Manager
and see if the drives are flagged with yellow
indicating some type of failure. It's probably
listed something like:

Generic USB Storage-SDC USB Device
(there are probably 4 of these ).

The following article explains how to use
Device Manager.

Another possibility is that you dutifully used the "Safely Remove
Hardware" control before removing a card, and you haven't re-booted
since.

This control will assume that you wanted to "unplug" the (internal)
USB connection it uses, and will therefore deactivate the reader until
the system is rebooted (or until you open up your machine, unplug the
USB cable to the reader, and then plug it in again ;-).

I no longer the "Safely Remove" feature--I just wait a respectable
amount of time since my last write access to the card, and remove
it. (I also disable write cachine in the card reader's properties,
under "policies" to make "Safely Remove..." unnecessary.)

Right on the money!
After reading your response and thinking for two seconds i realized that
when one "safely removes a device" they are removing the reader, not the
card!!
so to reactiveate the reader i just needed to put a card in the reader and
reboot!
Thanks so much.
i will now just wait a few and remove the card.
This was an excellant post! Many thanks.

I'm glad it worked for you!

If you haven't already done so, find the card reader in "Device
Manager", right-click on it and select "Properties", then select
the "Policies" tab and click on the button to "Optimize for quick
removal". This disables write caching, making it *safe* to remove
a card as soon as writing is complete.

If your want to remove a card from the card reader on the front of the
computer, don't use the 'Safely Stop Hardware' applet, simply right click on
it in Windows Explorer and select 'Eject'.
The card's logical drive will remain for the next use.
