Thanks for the response-what I have posted is the whole of the error message, which is:scvhost.exe-application error. I have also posted all that I know of my hardware rig; apart from 1xdvd-rewriter, 1xdvd player, wifi, both built in and a seprerate sitecom usb. Am using win xp home, got avg7, spybot and ad-aware, zone alarm, ISP is NTL (cable broadband).

Dont know what else to write

Sorry, I'm used to seeing these errors like ...

svchost.exe application error:
"the instruction at "0x009a96bc" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be written."

... and so on.

There usually is more to the error. ;)

This error occurs because Microsoft Windows XP SP2 uses the Data
Execution Prevention (DEP) feature to help prevent damage from viruses
and from other security threats.

DEP works alone or with compatible microprocessors to mark some memory
locations as non-executable." If a program tries to run code from a
protected location, DEP closes the program and notifies you, whether the
code is malicious or not.

HP and Microsoft are working on the issues arising after installing SP2
and soon HP would be releasing Update patch to resolve the issue.
As you can see, this was specific to HP ... I was looking along those lines.

another is ...
o help protect your computer, Windows has close this program.

Name: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services
Publisher: Microsoft Corp

Before I could write all that down, the second dialog popped up, titled:

svchost.exe - Application Error

It says:

The instruction at "0x009ad2cd" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".

I can OK to terminate or cancel to debug (though it doesn't actually allow a debug).

The resulting MS error report:

EventType : BEX P1 : svchost.exe P2 : 5.1.2600.2180 P3 : 41107ed6
P4 : unknown P5 : 0.0.0.0 P6 : 00000000 P7 : 009ad2cd
P8 : c0000005 P9 : 00000008

Involving files:

C:\DOCUME~1\David\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER355b.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\David\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER355b.dir00\appcompat.txt
This guy needs to turn off "system reboot on error" to get a full BSOD which in turn will give me more information.

Right-click my computer ... click Properties, then the Advance tab ... under Startup and Recovery/Settings un-tick Automatically Restart ... OK/Apply OK

Then we should get a 'proper' BSOD (blue screen of death) that should give us more information.

Hi there-thanks for the advice so far-not sure what good getting the bsod will do. Have some more info, that I hope helps-after scvhost.exe-application error, it says ""The instruction at 0x7c918fea", referenced memory at "0x00000010", the memory could not be written, click on ok to terminate programme or click on cancel to debug the programme".

That really is all the info that I have, if you have more info please step forward-it is not life or death for the pc yet. I am worried, that it maybe a precursor for something more serious.

Right-click my computer ... click Properties, then the Advance tab ... under Startup and Recovery/Settings un-tick Automatically Restart ... OK/Apply OK
