Script Error

For several months I have had this problem and neither
Earthlink nor Gateway Tech support have been able to solve
it. Microsoft suggested I use this support source. About 10
seconds after I connect to the internet using my phone line
and Earthlink, I get a dialogue box that pops up in the
center of my screen and says "Script Error - Line 54 -
Position 5." It happens with Internet Explorer 6, Netscape
7 and even when I've already closed my browser down. I have
Windows XP. The box stays on the screen, though fortunately
I can put it behind everything else. When I try to close
the box it pops back right away. When I disconnect from the
internet and then try to close it after I've also closed
the Earthlink Taskbar, it redials my connection. I have to
hit the close button on the new dialing dialogue box about
5 times to get it to stop dialing. Whew. Help please.
Thanks.

Hi lisa :)

First try this and see if it helps:

Script Debugging Problem

Open IE
Tools | Advanced
Under Browings:
Disable Script Debugging - Check it
Display a notification about every script error - Uncheck it
Apply
OK

If not, then........

Look under Documents and Settings/User/Start Menu/Programs/Start Up and
delete anything you are not sure of.

(User is the name you log on as. It may also be under All Users)
If there is nothing there,

Click Start > Run and type msconfig then press OK.
Under Start Up tab look for the offending line and uncheck it. Reboot. When
the windows pops up about changes made check the Do Not Remind Me box.

Do you have the JavaScript plug-in installed?

or...........

You might also try installing the Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP
if you have not already done so. The install includes a new jscript.dl

Allow active content to run in files on My Computer - Windows XP Service

or......

Internet options>Advanced tab..scroll down to Security and check Allow
active content to run in My Computer.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Thank you so much. I have followed your instructions (everything), including
going to the Microsoft Error information pages (?kbid=306831 especially). I
have also disconnected Earthlink's Accelerater. The script error is gone, but
now everytime Internet Explorer opens it says "Cannot Connect to Server". I
then have to go into Tools | Internet Options | Connections | Settings (and
also Lan Settings) and uncheck the "Use a proxy server for your Lan". This
happens everytime. The computer isn't remembering this setting (even with
rebooting). It wants to put a check in there. Once I take the check out, I
can then get Explorer to load a page. Any help with be very appreciated.
Thanks.

Instead of using IE's Tools menu to make that setting,
try using the Control Panel's Internet Options applet.
Opens a dialog titled Internet Properties.
Quick way to enter it: Run... control inetcpl.cpl

Since you are having trouble I would also close all IE windows first
and verify that iexplore.exe was not an active process (e.g. in Task
Manager's Processes tab).

Thanks.

Lisa

Good luck
