Windows XP Screensaver & Powerdown non-activation

I am running Windows XP Pro to the latest update.

My screen saver and therefore monitor power down are not being activated. Something has happened to block the timing mechanism which knows when to activate these procedures.

I can switch a screensaver on, but to power the monitor down, whilst leaving everything running, I have to switch off the monitor.

Is there any way I can rectify this problem, or is there a way I can activate the Power Down and then restore by clicking my mouse.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

do you mean, turn monitor off after 30mins and shut down after an hour for example?

if you do, go start> settings> control panel> power options

That was set up months ago.

No the prob is that the underlying software in the Windows XP OS isn't triggering the screensaver and then the Power Down.

So I want a cure or a quick fix
