screen resolution option not available

I just purchased a new monitor (an Optiquest Q19wb), but when I installed it,
the suggested resolution was 1440 x 900. However, this option is not
available to me when I went to change the display settings. The closest
option was 1280 x 1024. As a result, the image looks wonky. I've even gone
through the advance dialogue, to the "Adaptor" tab and listed all modes to
see if that resolution existed. No luck. I'm running Windows XP, so that
option should exist. Any suggestions?

Hi lucho4,

I faced the same problem 3 days ago, with my new Samsung 940BW LCD/TFT monitor. These monitors perform well only in their native resolution (1440x900). As this resolution was missing, I had to download the driver update for my NVidia GeForce 7300LE card. After a reboot, the 1440x900 was available, and no more fuzziness.

So, you need to contact the graphics card manufacturer / support team for a driver update. You're not alone with this problem.

Another option is to set a custom resolution in the software provided by your graphics card manufacturer.(Example.. NVidia control panel). If the card is capable of supporting higher resolutions than 1440x900, you should be able to set a custom resolution (for 1440x900) without a problem.

You are misunderstanding the quote "1440x900". They said your monitor can
support upto this resolution but what about your Graphic Card. You are
getting 1280x1024 because this is the higher resolution supportted by your
Graphic Card. Try updating your VGA Drivers through manufacturer's web-site
or Google for the same. See if an update can increase the resolution for you.

Hi,

That's true in case of CRTs. But TFTs run fine only in their native resolution. Although other resolutions are supported, the display won't be as clear, and in most cases be fuzzy.

There are two other issues here, which the above fails to take into account.

First, the Optiquest Q19wb is an LCD monitor, and it's important that LCD
monitors be run at their native resolution. It's not that the monitor *can*
support that resolution; it's that the monitor *should be* run at that
resolution. If that native resolution is 1440x900, then that's what he
should run at; anything else will be unsatisfactory.

Second, this is a widescreen monitor, and 1440x900 is a widescreen
resolution. His problem is not simply that his video card won't support a
higher resolution, it's that his video card apparently can't support that
aspect ratio. That's one of the reasons he says "the image looks wonky."

Also note that what resolution his video card supports is primarily a
function of how much RAM it has (at any particular color depth). He could
very likely get a higher resolution by lowering the color depth, but he
still could not get the wide-screen aspect ratio he requires.

So, although it doesn't hurt for him to try updating the video drivers, it's
highly unlikely that it will help him. What he almost certainly needs is a
new video card that supports wide-screen aspect rations, and one with enough
video memory to give him that 1440x900 at the color depth he wants.
