On win 2k, reinstalled and updated in the last month,
on the desktop:

right click->properties->Screen Saver->Power->Turn off monitor

and select After 20 mins. But it doesn't do it, although before
the re-installation it did. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help,
Mike.

Complete reinstall, starting with removal of the partition
and formatting of the disk.

Did you then install mobo chipset drivers and other hw drivers, from manu
sites NOT winupdate?

All hardware drivers supplied by the supplier of
the computer were installed before the Microsoft
update procedure. In particular: ASUS mobo,
Radeon vid.

If this worked prior to the reinstallation, all manu drivers have been
installed and no hardware was changed from when it was ok, the only other
thing I can think to check is the settings in the bios.
What was the reason for the rebuild?, if it was a new mobo check Asus for
bios update.
Did you try changing the setting to 10mins, then applying, and leaving the
sys. I sometimes find on one of my sys when the monitor wont switch off
changing the setting causes it to do so, for reasons I havnt bothered to
work out.

I reinstalled for two reasons:

1. It stopped working. In particular, it would no longer
interact with the update site. It gave an error number
that I sent to a newsgroup several times, but I got no
response.

2. Win2k likes to be reinstalled about once per year.

There were no hardware changes, but I did install new
software:

1. NOD32 instead of Norton for virus

2. PowerDVD 6.0 to view some movies.

Could one of these be the problem?

There was no change to the bios except boot
device order, which I put back the way it was.

I like your suggestion to change the time. I'll try it.

Thanks,
Mike.

Win2k likes to be reinstalled each year?
I have sys that run 24/7 the only time I reinstall is in the event of a
major rebuild/failure

The screen power problem seems solved now. I changed
the time value a few times, and I also clicked a save
configuration button that I hadn't noticed before.
Unfortunately, I did these together, so I cannot
report the actual cause.

With regard to reliability, I prefer Linux. Let
alone re-installation, I note that my Linux web
server, running on an old 400 mHz Dell, has been
rebooted three times in the last 359 days; twice
because I installed upgraded systems, and once
because its various protections could not deal with
my inadvertently cutting off the power at the UPS. :(

Thanks again for your help.

I spoke too soon. Today:

1. I power up my win2k box and do nothing else.
Several hours later: screen still on.

2. I log in as a user and immediately log off.
Several hours later: screen still on.

3. I log in as administrator, and immediately log off.
Several hours later: screen off.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike.
