screen gone bananas

I have a dell Dimension2350 2.8 ghz about 3 1/2 years old.
After a bit of flickering my screen suddenly reduced in width by about half.
ie. a quarter missing from either side which left a concave shaped(wider at
the top and bottom of the screen)with both left and right borders Black!
Everything else works as normal. Is it my graphics card?
If so, I have a Dimension3000(16 months old) at work in which i added a
matrox dual Graphics card a while back. So am I right in thinking that i
should be able to remove my original intel card fro the 3000 and put that
into the faulty 2350 with no ill effects to my 3000 mahcine?

Sounds like a horizontal-hold failure in the monitor.
To trouble-shoot, either connect the monitor to a different computer or,
as you suggested, try a different video card in the existing computer.

Thanks.
I will substitute another Monitor for this one on monday,as i have a spare
at work.
My only query is that when I go into properties for the monitor and the
graphics card, both are said to be working correctly! Is that normal if
there's a problem?!

The only video "problems" that the "Properties" tab will reveal are driver
and/or resource conflicts.
If the monitor fails completely, there might be an error on the properties
tab, but without a monitor to display the error, you would never know.
If the video card fails completely, your system won't complete the POST.
