Hi root!

Here is a copy of a message I posted on another board August 18th
*please note that the page at the first link did indeed list more than 250
programs that day. That was three days ago. MS must have fixed a lot of
issues with games compatibility, and issues with 30+ microsoft programs which
were listed that day. At this rate (of daily revising the version and fixes)
I'll wait until the dust settles. I work on my computers every day, and can't
risk a glitch which would cost me wages.

Go back and study the list carefully. It's all obscure stuff as proven by
the zillions of folks installing SP2 with NO problems.

Could be, root.

But ths is closer to AWU than D-clink and accept :P

computer and all I have to do now is click install.

Thanks for raining on my illusions that someone on the
web was actually telling the truth. lol

You read that and assumed AWU and I assumed the 266MB download. Is it even
easily visible when AWU finishes downloading?

I have yet to see a report of a completed AWU SP2 install.

www.acronis.com is better and do it to a removable HD in a KingWin tray
and
keep it offsite.

There are very mixed reviews on acronis. However the new Symantec drive
image 7 is crap (they can win awards on how to ruin software). I use Drive
Image 2002 which has saved me many dozens of times.

If he's already downloaded it, what's the point in waiting?
Won't he have the same potential problems in "a week" because it's today's
version?
When they quit fixing it every day, then I'll consider downloading it.

:

What in the world do you mean by "when they quit fixing it every day"?
It hasn't been "fixed" since the rtm release. It's the same package and
don't expect any changes to the SP. There will be individual patches
from certain issues as time goes on, but no changes to the SP. Don't
spread false information.

You have to accept the Eula, whether with AU or the network install.
Automatic is not automatic, exactly.

Yep, there's always somebody stirring the pot with trash. Thanks for
posting that.

I've been reading it every day, my point was three days ago it had more than
250 programs listed, after it was released.

Have fun with SP2, I'll just wait over here, lol. ;}

Understood....but please see reviews on cnet and amazon.com that vary
WILDLY. Apparently there are problems.

What you totally failed to understand is that the 250 programs behave
differently. They are not incompatible or disabled.

If you'd read it then you'd know it was 250 obscurities.

Wow, I totally understood that 250 programs didn't work as designed three
days ago. If they don't (rather didn't) work as designed after a fix to the
OS that's supposed to be compatible with them, (and was compatible yesterday)
I'd say that's a roll-out before beta testing was completed.

And the page listed known issues (just as it does today) for those affected
programs which are still unresolved.
That list contains programs which are at this time "incompatible or
disabled" without adjustments, or fixing a fix. Read the list, "will not
start" repeated over and over (beta testing failed us.)

I am not a beta tester.

that was my point

So was your point that of:
Yes, the fix messed up a lot of programs, but eventually they will be fixed,
too. They are not permanently broken, so it doesn't matter how many
(illiterate) computer users have to blow good bucks to pay MS certified
repairmen so they can get back online and play their games, or how many
senior citizens have to pay to fix an upgrade so they can use e-mail again?
How many times tech support has to repeat the line by line instructions on
how to disable the new firewall, for those who are not computer savvy.

I think you missed my point, and "failed to understand"

they were not obscure programs listed
my kingdom for a screenshot
ugh
here's another post by a friend from tonight:

"I was reading the top 10 reasons to download SP2, since I need extreme
convincing (I enjoy it when my network works smoothly) to download it.

Funny enough, the 2nd reason to download SP2 was for compatibility. So, I
read on, and was quite humoured by the first paragraph...

"Every IT pro knows it: there always seem to be a few unforeseen
compatibility issues when service packs are deployed. There’s already been
wide trade-press coverage of compatibility issues discovered—embarrassingly,
rather late in the beta process—with Microsoft’s own CRM software and the
popular Halo game. Fortunately, these issues have already been resolved (see
the products’ respective websites), as have a few other snags with
third-party firewalls and other tools. But the lesson remains: IT pros need
to be cautious and methodical when rolling out this, or any new software
update. Fortunately, we’ve put together a terrific library of documentation,
Knowledge Base articles and deployment guides to help you roll out Windows XP
SP2 efficiently. Be sure to check out the IT Pro Portal on TechNet, where
these guides will help you get started."

Embarrased, eh? :)"

Here's my reply:

"That looks like a David Letterman's Top Ten Reason!
And it's so reassuring/convincing!
What they didn't say is that there were more than 250 programs listed AFTER
roll-out, they just referred to "late in beta testing"
Ha Ha thank you for the belly laugh!"

OK I remember "the popular Halo game" on the list three days ago along with
more than 40 microsoft programs ten of which were XP programs.
Is that what you'd call obscure?

Not hardly. The list represents obscurities.

Heh
search this board for sp2 and it only gets about 60 hits from today, that's
all the search engine kicked back, wonder how many more there are on this
board and in tech support, or deployment.
Read that list of titles, I didn't see any saying "Thank You" to microsoft
for such a great upgrade.
Is that obscure?

Which MS programs? Which version? The answer to these two questions shows
OBSCURE!

Hey root, I don't know how it happened, but half of my previous post to
luminos was deleted from your reply. Don't you want to talk about that aspect
of the effects of the upgrade?

I'll paste it here:

HUH?

How many folks have downloaded and installed SP2 today? How many are here
squaking?

That is just semantics! It either works or it doesn't and most people do not
have the knowledge to fix it.
