scanner software

I got a visioneer 6100usb scanner, it is working, but the software cd that
came with it, does not work itself with XP, when I tried to load the
software I got a message saying scanner is not supported by Windows NT. Yet
when I run MGI Photosulit III I can scan with it, using both preview and
scan, but the scan saved to a bmp file and I want it to save as a jpg file,
is there a scanner program that'll allow me to change that saving to bmp to
jpg and run the scanner under XP?

Irfanview will change it from bmp to jpeg, etc. Get Irfanview. Change it
and then save that jpeg.
Then scan that. Voila!

I want to second Helen's recommendation. Irfanview is one of those
really useful programs that's well-crafted and has excellent manners. I
raced to send the programmer a donation. People who write code this
humanely deserve to be supported! Try it: you'll like it.

In addition, I'd like to recommend that you contact the site of your
scanner manufacturer: they may have an update as a free download.
Irfanview integrates with my scanner seamlessly. I'm using a PrimaScan,
which I believe is a "private label" brand of your scanner; the outfit
is in Pleasanton, California (or nearby). I recall that their English
wasn't good, but the software hit the spot for an upgrade.

I have Irfanview 3.91 on my system, I tried it and it failed. I picked the
scanner, then I hit acquire image, it came up with the scanner box and I
prviewed the image and then clicked on scan, the scanner operated and at the
end of the scan the outline of a large box appered on screen and Irfanview
totaly shut itself down and I found ZERO saved image anyplace.

I did find the bmp image from MGI's scan and there was nothing but a blank
color filled box with no image in it at all.

I have found out that the scanner is useless to me. It does NOT have driver
that works with XP at all. I can preview a scan but that's all.

I'll see if I can sell it for $25.00 to someone with a w98 machine.

Just a thought, alongside the other suggestions, if you really want to use
it and you have a working 98 driver, why not just dual boot with a Win98
partition. If you strip it to the bone, it will boot in seconds and allow
proper scanner support. Make sure the partitions are both Fat32, though, so
they can "see" each other.
I don't have problems with this, as I habitually use Fat32 regardless of
whether it's 98, 2000 or XP. Somefolks like NTFS, but I see more problems
than advantages. YMMV.

I'm on there and they could only come up with a driver from another machine
which I have tried with that brand and it didn't work either. And even the
company says their driver for the 6100 is not oked for XP. They are getting
a few of their drivers set up for XP but not going back as far as the 6100.
If my old Gateway Astro machine was running I could have used it on that
one, as it has 98 on it. But until I can get a new "copy" of the recovery cd
it's a dead machine.

There is some info here;
http://www.geocities.com/bart_simpson_gr/visioneer6100-winXPinstall.html

and the NT drivers here;
http://www.visioneer-europe.com/support/faqs/68.htm
look for 6100u2k.exe

as I understand it even with the NT drivers installed you will still need a
graphics app to import from the scanner, as the visioneer stuff does not
work - why not try photofiltre - that has an import function.
