What's the best free or shareware sound recorder software?

I have a machine with XP on it, 750mhz and 16ga's of hard drive(s) and a mic
for recording from a record player.

I want to be able to record to wav formatt and be able to edit down the file
to pick out some sections for use with IncrediMail. ICM can only read WAV
and MiDi files for sound, not mp3's.

Is there such a beast?
