scanner redirection in TS 2003 help!

R

Rob

We have been testing TS 2003 for a few days now and have come to
hooking up a scanner. We are using the latest client and have plenty
of good results with our printers. We started with an Epson Expression
1680 which is what we need to use with out software. We could not get
that to build on the TS. I found a list of supported scanners from
Microsoft and tried the HP scanjet 3300 to see if that is an issue.
Both were connected through USB.

After having no luck with the scanner redirecting we tried to install
it directly on the server so that the correct drivers would install.
The result of installing the scanner on the server was that it showed
up in devices but not does not show under scanners in the control
panel. The scanner basically doesn't do anything as if it was not
installed. Any thoughts here? Am I missing something basic?

Thank you for any help,
Rob

Yes you are missing something. Windows 2003 TS does NOT support USB
redirection so this will not work, no matter what you do.

Actually all of the material I have found on Microsofts Website about
TS 2003 says that it does redirect USB and is suppose redirect
Scanners specifically USB scanners. In addition to that I have
succesfully redirected a DYMO Label printer and a few home inkjet
printers that are attached to the client through the USB port without
using any reg. hacks or patches.

Please read the original posting since I still need some help!!

Thank you,

I'm afraid that you have misunderstood the material that you have
read. W2K and Windows 2003 support redirection of USB *printers*,
but not USB *scanners*. Prnting and scanning are two different
issues. Not even Citrix supports scanning in a remote session.

The Microsoft website specifically states that w2003 server TS does
redirect peripherals including scannersand palm devices and many more.
If we want to get into if its USB or not(of which I was just trying to
give the situation I had going and everyone seems to be hooked on) we
can reference this document.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;317524

This is the list of recommended scanners to use. On the list you will
see an HP Scanjet 3300c. This is one of the scanners I have tried to
use and it can only be connected by USB.

So no. They have not said spicifically that usb works but all the
collateral material does. Besides, doesn't it make since if they
improved printers by allowing USB they would also carry it over to the
scanners if they are going to do that. USB is the most common way to
connect a scanner. In fact I challenge anyone to come up with a list
of on the market scanners that connect via parallel anymore.

The original problem also said that we are having trouble connecting
directly to the server as well. I believe there has to be something in
the new 2003 interface that I am forgetting to turn on because it
doesnt want to recognize anything after a "successful" install. Please
see my original post for details.

and Please Please just dont through a quick unresearched answer back
out. I only give advice when I have tested and know for sure the
answer and have dont the research. It pains me to get obviously wrong
advice from a "certified" person.

thanks you,
rob

The list of scanners in KB 317524 is supported on Windows 2003,
but nothing is mentioned about them being supported in a *TS
session*.

There have been a number of posts from Microsoft personnel in
various terminal server related newsgroups, all confirming that
USB scanners under TS are not supported on Windows 2003.
The most recent of these posts is in
microsoft.public.windows.terminal_services, on 8 July 2003 by
Benny Fu from Microsoft Product Support Services at
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8
&selm=L9BhJtdRDHA.1724%40cpmsftngxa09.phx.gbl
(URL will wrap)

I'll include the body of his post here for your convenience:

<quote>
Based on my research, currently there is no USB device redirection
available via Terminal Services. The only USB devices redirected
are Smart Cards (at the smart card API level, not the device
level) and printers.

What we are seeing is the redirection of the subsystem handling of
a virtual device, like a printer subsystem device, storage
subsystem device, or Human Interface Device (HID).
</quote>

Could you please post the URL to the Microsoft website where you
have read about *USB scanners* being supported under TS?

Technical Overview of Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/overview/terms
erv.mspx
doesn't say a word about scanners.

What's New in Terminal Server at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/evaluation/overview/tec
hnologies/terminalserver.mspx

names the following supported devices:
When connecting to a terminal server using an RDP 5.1 client, many
of the local resources are available within the remote session,
including the client file system, smart cards, audio (output),
serial ports, printers (including network), and the clipboard.

So as far as I know, all information points to USB scanners not
being supported in a TS session, but I would be delighted to be
proven wrong!
