scanner problems

Hi,

OS: Windows Vista. I am struggling with the installation of CanoScan
N67OU. It used to run splendidly under Windows XP. It is on the list
of Vista compatible hardware so I thought it would be a piece of cake
to make it run under Vista. I downloaded and installed Vista driver
and software (ScanGear Toolbox) from the web site (usa.canon.com) but
the toolbox won't communicate with the scanner. I get the following
error message when trying to do so:

"Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable (USB) may be disconnected.
Scanner driver will be closed."

The cable is not an issue. It is securely plugged in both ends, so it
must be another reason why the scanner won't work. The scanner makes
a
sound when I boot up or unplug/plug the USB, which indicates, I
believe, there is some connection but apparently not the right one.
Anybody out there who has got some ideas of how to go about trying to
find out what is the matter?

OR

Did you install all of the software BEFORE hooking up the scanner. Pull out
the USB cable and then replug it..

I replaced a Lexmark scanner/printer because it was not vista compatible.
I purchased a Canon MP470 P/S, installation was a breeze. I have noticed
with
Vista that you must follow the directions or it will not work.

I am having a similar crisis. I have a Canon MF5770 printer/scanner/copier.
It worked like a charm on my old XP laptop. When my laptop died, I bought a
new HP Vista 64bit laptop. The interface with the MF5770 is atrocious. The
printer continued to work. But the scanner wouldn't work at all.
I have been to the Canon website dozens of times to download, and
re-download the supposed vista drivers. After many failed attempts, I called
Canon tech support. Despite what the website says, as of today, 12-30-08,
the Canon rep said there is NO Vista 64 support for the MF5770
printer/scanner/copier. They told me the exact same thing six months ago, so
I can only assume the Canon has no intention of providing any Vista drivers
for this perfectly good machine. (Why don't they say this on their
website????)
Today, the Canon rep suggested I shop around for a third-party Vista-64
scanner, Does such an animal exist? I've looked around the web, but haven't
found anything that works.
At at wit's end. It looks like I'll have to junk the machine. Can anyone
recommend a proven printer/scanner that will work with my Vista 64-bit laptop?

This is an obvious attempt to generate new hardware sales. My Epson
Perfection 1650 Photo scanner will not work with Vista 64 bit. Here is a
direct quote from Epson Support in response to my request for help,"At this
time there is no Windows Vista 64-bit driver for your Epson Product".
Bummer! It worked on me. I had to purchase a new HP C-4450,
scanner, printer, copier which does work with 64-Bit. So long Epson.

This is the major problem for 64bit computing. While computer internals get
driver support, older external devices do not. This is the reason that I
don't go '64'. While my HP printer has support, my Canon Lide does not, and
I would sooner keep the scanner than migrate to '64bit' which would really
give me no advantage over what I have now..

64 bit isn't the total problem. Some scanners just won't work with Vista
period unless you can find third party drivers to give basic functionality.
I ran into this but I knew from the onset after running the Microsoft
Hardware compatibility utility that my scanner wasn't going to work with any
version of Vista.

There are similar problems with other hardware. I bought an x64 vista
laptop to add to an x86 xp desktop and x86 vista laptop on my network. My
linksys 802.11n router works well with it, but the linksys 54g print server
will not. Linksys says no x64 drivers will be coming. Microsoft and HP
(printer) say there is no known workaround. I was forced to buy a bluetooth
adapter for the printer to get it to work with the x64 laptop.

In most cases, the only way that manufacturers get to sell new products is
by not providing support for the latest incoming operating system. Can't
blame them really..

I have the Epson Perfection 1650 that the OP mentioned. FYI, Epson put out
a "Smart Panel" upgrade made to be compatible with Vista (32). It cost
$9.95 to get the download and happy to say that it worked as advertised.
