Scanner Not Recognized in Windows XP and Acrobat 6

We're running Windows XP, Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Pro, and an
HP Scanjet 4570C scanner. When we try to create a PDF
file from scanner, the software does not recognize that
the scanner is installed. We are prompted to re-install
the HP software. The HP software was re-installed and
still the problem occurred. The HP software is HP Photo
and Imaging Software version 1.1 for Windows XP.

I installed the latest Acrobat Pro 6.0.1 update,HP Photo
and Imaging Software version 2.0, and an update from HP
which addresses this specific problem with Acrobat 6.0.
This did not help and the problem still occurs.

Is there a trick or tip to getting this scanner to work?

If the scanner software will produce a .tif file, Adobe will happily
convert that to a .pdf for you.
