scanner not found

We have a Fujitsu scanner installed on a workstation via a
SCSI connection, Windows 2000.

We have a daytime user that uses the scanner all day.
When she logs out another person logs in for the night
shift. Sometimes (only once a week or so) when this
second user logs in the scanning software errors stating
that no scanner can be found.

When we look at the device list the scanner is gone and
has to be reinstalled.

Is this a user problem or hardware??

I have a umax astra2000u/p scanner which I have installed
(5 times) but windows 2000 is not detecting it. Do you
have any suggestions on what I can do. I don't have 99
dollars for tech support. And would like to use this
scanner..it worked fine with my windows 98...but 98
crashed so much, I had windows2000 installed. Because it
is classified as a site license, microsoft will not help
me...this is most frustrating as my son works for
microsoft (programer only) and can't even help me. Any
suggestions you have I would appreciate. I am fairly
computer literate...thanks

Right-click on My Computer, go to Manage/Services and
Applications/Services. Is the "Still Image Service" enabled and
started?
