Scanner & Camera Wizard

Has anyone experienced recent problems
with Windows XP recognising digital
cameras as a 'USB Mass Storage Device'
instead of as a camera?
Upto last Thursday, 2nd Oct, my Olympus
mju 400 cameras WAS recognised and the
Scanner & Camera Wizard automatically
appeared, plus the camera was shown in
the Scanners & Camera Folder.
Since Sunday 5th October, it fails to be
be recognised and I have to download
photos another way. The only changes I
have made between these 2 dates are:

1) Installed Security Patch KB828026 for
Windows Media Player
2) Installed Cum Patch for IE 6 SP1
(KB828750)

It is difficult to believe that either of
these would cause XP to cease recognising
a camera, but logic tells me this must be so.
Has anyone else had a similar problem, or
can anyone tell me if there is a way of making
the wizard treat a 'Removable Disk' or a
'USB Mass Storage Device' as a camera?

Any help appreciated - Mike Dean

Mike:
I have had the same problem since I installed a security
patch in August. Autorun starts but when you choose the
Scanner & Camera Wiz, nothing happens. Camera (also an
Olympus) only shows as a Mass Storage Device. Most
advice on this board dealt wiith Autorun not starting so
I contacted Microsoft. After many attempted fixes, I was
told to reinstall XP. That fixed the problem (corrupted
files they said).
Now the bad When I reinstalled the security patches
the problem reappeared and I am back where I started.
Funny that even now they will not admit that their patch
caused this issue but it obviously has.
I have resigned myself to use explorer to "move" my
pictures to the pc.

Alan: I have since found the answer, and
it was indeed caused by the IE update Pack,
which disables autoplay for Removeable Drives.
The easiest answer is to instal TweakUI (part
of Microsoft's free Power Toys for XP), which
is free to download or is often on the cover
disk of Computer magazines (e.g. PC Advisor
Tips & Tricks for Autumn 2003 now out).
When you have installed it, start TweakUI, then
double-click 'My Computer', then 'Autoplay'
then 'Types', then tick the box 'Enable Autoplay
for Removeable Drives'. Exit TweakUI and voila,
the Scanner & Camera Wizard autostarts when
connecting your camera.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for your reply - Mike
