What is the equivalent scandisk on XP Home? I am trying to install SuSE Linux and i
cannot shrink Windows partition because of disk errors. I previously installed Red Hat Linux

The equivalent is chkdsk, and that is true for any version of XP (Home, Pro,
etc.). Issue the command by clicking on Start / Run and then enter "cmd"
without the quotes. After getting into "dos", type "chkdsk" without the
quotes.

Before beginning, shut down your anti-virus software, any screensaver that
is running, and anything else running in the background. Probably the best
procedure to avoid interference from background-running programs is to run
chkdsk in Safe Mode. To do that, just hold down the F8 key during the
initial stages of a boot, then click on the appropriate choice in the menu.

Excuse my first response. I still have too much of the W98 procedures in my
noggin.

The equivalent scandisk command is "chkdsk", and here is the usual way to
run it, and Safe Mode is unnecessary.

Click on Start / Run. Then enter "cmd" without the quotes. After getting
into "dos", enter "chkdsk /f" without the quotes.

You will then be asked if you want to schedule chkdsk to run the next time
you restart the computer. Enter "y" without the quotes for yes. Then enter
"exit" to get back to Windows.

Then the next time you restart, chkdsk will run automatically before the
bootup is complete.

I hope this clarifies things a little better.
