Scan Disk

Hi All....i'm new to Windows XP and i was wondering where
you go to Scan Disk in it. When i go to
Programs...Access...System Tools.......I see where it
says to Defrag but it doesn't say anything about scanning
disk for errors. In my previos versions of
Windows98se..I would always scan disk before i
defragged. Can anyone tell me how to do this or does it
automatically do this when i defrag in Windows XP?

Windows XP has a "Checkdisk" error-checking utility that replaced
the old "Scandisk" utility in previous versions of Windows.

Right click on my computer, properties, tools and check disk.

open my computer,right click on the drive you want to
scan,choose properties,tools,error checking.

does this (sorry if analyis is spelt wrong)!

Two questions....i found how to scan disk by going to my
computer but when i get a message saying something about
it is unable to scan disk until you restart your computer
again. It performs this once i shut down the computer
and then turn it back on but i was wondering why it just
doesn't check disk when i ask it to? Second
question...is it better to check the "automatically fix
errors" box or should i look to see what the errors are
first before i have Windows fix them. It seems like
whatever the outcome was when it scanned disk this time
with the fix errors checked.....it just flashed on the
screen before i even had a chance to read them.

There are certain items chkdsk can't do while the drive is mounted, or
in-use, by the OS. It schedules these tasks to be done when the drive
is restarted and the OS isn't yet in full control of the drive.

As for the second question, it is up to you if want to see the errors
before they are corrected. Unless you are pretty computer savy, the
errors won't mean a whole lot to you anyway.
