Disk Defragmenter won't execute

Charles W Davis

Compaq laptop, Windows XP Home SP3 plus some 18 updates, scanned with
Windows Defender, MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. Seems to be malware free. Disk
Defragmenter will open but will not Analyze or Defragment. The hour glass
doesn't run.

Any thoughts?

Lots.

Do you have Diskkeeper installed - ever?

Not a single error message?

DCOM running (as above by Gerry).

Three easy ways to run defrag:

Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter. Does that
work?
Right click your drive in My Computer, Properties, Tools, Defragment
Now. Does that work?
Start, Run, dfrg.msc. Does that work?

Go to Start, Run, cmd. Reregister the defrag DLLs:

regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll (get an OK message)
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll (get an OK message)

If the regsvr32 fails, change to the \Windows\system32 folder to run
them.

Browse to \Windows\inf. Right click the dfrg.inf file and choose
Install.

If you have the time, try one thing at a time so you know which one
(if any) fix it.

Jose, I have no idea whether Diskeeper was ever installed. This computer
belongs to a club member.

Your first, second and third methods of running all cause the Disk
Defragmenter dialog box to open. Both the Analyze and Defragment buttons
seem to accept the pressing, but no reaction, even after several minutes.
Rebooted.
cmd reported both dlls were successfully reregistered.
No success.
For the $20 donation to the Club, I stopped and downloaded the AusLogic Disk
Defragmenter. The club member's old laptop now runs like a champ.

If they are happy, that's good.

This time you added the "buttons seem to accept the pressing" which
was missing from your earlier post... I thought the might have been
greyed out or something. I did not ask the right questions, this
time.

But, champs are good.
