System Restore, Error Checking and Disk Defragmenter in WinXp Home

R

Richard

Following the removal of Trojan malware, I am immediately unable to:

a) Create a Restore Point (and there are none available because SR was
disabled during Trojan removal process.)
b) Error Checking (Chkdsk) on C:/ and D:/ will not run.
c) Disk Defragmenter on C:/ and D:/ will not run.

All three Tools start but do not proceed beyond initial dialog box.
WinXP SP3 gives following error message "Windows was unable to complete
the <insert tool>"

CHKDSK from cmd prompt with reboot to finish with no advantage.

FSUTIL DIRTY QUERY from cmd prompt shows neither partition is dirty.

McAfee ODS and MBAM show clean scans.

Have gone back over 1200 previous posts with no advantage.

this is a common
problem.

the process of
repairing the system
does not end after
the infection is removed.

now the corrupted
system files will need
to be replaced with
genuine ones from
a win xp cd.

here are the instructions:

You have (much) more work to do. A clean bill of health from online virus
scans and from MBAM does not necessarily mean the machine's 100% clean.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan!

2. Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe
Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

DB, Pa Bear;

Thanks for the suggestions. I will review the "challenges" in the
latter and decide if consulting the local computer tech who built my
computer is perhaps not the better course of action for me. I do not
envisage spending the coming long-weekend dealing with this. In the
meantime, I have invoked the Windows File Protection utility (SFC.EXE)
and run a scan of the system files. No advantage there either.
