Error check and disk defragmenter

J

Jennylb2002

When ever I try to run the error check it gives me the message that Windows
was unable to complete the error check right after I hit start. When I try to
defragment the drive it gives me the error Disk Defragmenter could not start.
Also I now have no system restore points even though I have not used it.
I have Windows XP service pack 3, half my disk space unused, A dell Lap top
about 1 year old with extra memory, I have run superantispyware and only had
3 adware cookies, Malware to clean after my son went to a gaming web site.
Any help would be appreciated.

You need to fix chkdsk. Until you do that you will make no progress
regarding Disk Defragmenter.

Please provide the exact message you see when you attempt to run chkdsk
(Error Checker). You have given your explanation of the message and not
what it actually says.

The solution does lie with system restore. Do you have or have you had
any Norton Utilities (Diskeeper) on the computer?

Open a 'Command Prompt' (dos-box)

(Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > 'Command Prompt')

....and type the following command at the [C:\>] prompt :

CHKDSK C: /F

....then press the [ENTER] key.

This will result in you getting a message returned like this one :

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

....then press the [Y] key followed by the [ENTER] key.

....On rebooting your machine, you will see chkdsk run before Windows
starts.

It will then fix all file system errors on the volume and so Disk
Defragmenter should have no problems starting after that.

Correction to my last post "The solution does NOT lie with system
restore."
