I don't know who the man is or what he told you, but it sounds like you
either got very inaccurate and confusing advice or you misunderstood him.

There is no kind of a disk called a scan disk. There was a program called
scandisk in some older Windows versions, but that has nothing to do with
this issue.

Are you looking to do a one-time transfer of some files, or are you
interested in setting up a system where you can do this whenever necessary?
Assuming the latter, the best way to do this with a home network. If you new
laptop has wireless capability, you may want to do it that way. For more
information on how to do this, read the tutorials here:

Are you sure he didn't say SanDisk? That's a usb flash drive where you can
copy files from the older computer to put on the new computer.

Plug it into the laptop and copy files from the lap onto the SanDisk. Then
plug it into the home computer and copy files from the SanDisk to the home
computer.

From another message in this thread I see you meant *San* Disk, not "Scan
Disk." Sandisk is the name of a company, and among their products are USB
flash drives. A flash drive ( aka thumb drive or pen drive) is simply a
portable drive that can be used to copy data from one place and move it to
another.

You don't *need* a thumb drive, and if you want a thumb drive, there are
many companies which make them besides Sandisk. If he told you you *need* a
Sandisk product, he was quite obviously less than straight with you.

A thumb drive (whether from Sandisk or any other company) is one of several
ways to move data from one computer to another. Depending on the amount of
data you have to move and how often you will need to do it, it may or may
not be the best way for you. If it's just once it may not be a bad choice,
but once again, if you will want to do this often, my personal preference
would be to set up a network between the two computers.

On the other hand, since you say you have the drive in front of you, you
apparently did what he told you to, and bought the device. For the future,
let me point out that the major qualification for getting a job as a
salesperson in most computer stores is the willingness to accept minimum
wage. These people are almost always a very poor source of information.

What you bought will probably work for you. It may or may not be the best
choice, but it will work. To use it, simply plug it into a USB port on the
"from" computer (the laptop)? and copy the files you want to it, then plug
it into a USB port on the "to" computer (the desktop?) and copy the files
from it. While it's plugged in, it will work much like a diskette would.

Dolphin does not say what the operating system is on the
home computer. This may be an issue"! Fine if both computers
have Windows XP.

Hope this helps.
