Saving Email messages as text files

A friend of mine uses Outlook (cannot remember exactly which version), and
asked me whether or not it is possible to back up / save all of his email
messages as individual text files. I know that you can back up each message
folder in Outlook collectively as a single backup file which can later be
restored, however I explained to him that I was unsure whether or not it was
possible to back up emails as individual text files (I believe he wants to do
this for some sort of archiving purpose as he has an abundance of important
emails). So, is this possible?

So why does he not simply archive his existing mail?
Presumably he all ready backs up?
Why save as individual txt files, whats the purpose?
With outlook closed it is only neccessary to copy the data files, in order
to create a backup

he does back up his emails, yes. however, he and a few others run a sort of
'social club', and they wish to store their older emails as text files for
ease of future reference.

He can select all the messages then file, save as one big text file. Or use
a 3rd party tool that saves them in other formats. Acrobat's package feature
works well too, but is expensive.

See http://www.slipstick.com/addins/housekeeping.asp for tools that can save
them in a universal format.
