saved word files default to wordpad???

When I save a Word doc. it states that it is saving in .doc but then all
files default to wordpad. My computer crashed and all my Word and Excel
files have defaulted to wordpad. I must use the "open with" to open them in
their respective programs. After opening and saving again, they again revert
to Wordpad?? How do I get them to save to their respective programs again
and eliminate the "open with" step???

The most efficient method would be to repair office (assuming you're using a
version that has the repair feature). Open Word or Excel and try Help -
Detect and Repair.
