word docs end up being saved as wordpad

due to some hassles with outlook i reinstalled office2000 and after that, i
think, now when i save new word documents as .doc (word), they are marked as
wordpad. so if just clicked to open, it defaults to wordpad. the doc's open
ok if opened directly from word. its a pain.
how do you reset word so that docs saved as word will be in fact be word
docs. can't believe this is happening
most thankful for help on this

The problem is with Explorer, not Word. Open Explorer. Go to Tools > Folder
Options > File Types. Scroll down the list until you come to DOC. Click
Change and select Word.
