"save as" crashes

Soon after my upgrade from Win2K-pro to WinXp-pro I noticed a problem using
the "Save as" button in one application. I thought it was application
specific as no other program was having problems. After working with the
computer for some time I realized it was a common problem.

If the application just saved the data to the default location, everything
was fine, if it tried to Open a "Browse" window, tha application would
terminate without comment, error message or application message and drop me
to my desktop.

This is true for ALL application that try to open a file browse screen.
"SAVE" works, "SAVE AS" crashes, as does any application that tries to open a
"Browse" window. "OPEN" from a list works, open from "BROWSE" crashes.

I have run a number of Registry checkers. Every Windows Utility and check
routine I can think of, and scanned all the Newsgroups... There are many
threads about "Save as" being broken, but no posted fixes.

I do know I didn't have the problem before my 2000>XP upgrade.

I am sure that doing a wipe, re-partition and clean install would fix
things, but I really don't want to do that, as that is why I did a UPGRADE,
so I wouldn't have to reload all my applications.

Oh yes, the same problem exists after a cold boot, or running in safe mode.

There are no messages in the application, security or Error logs.

What do I do next? I tried re-installing XP again, same problem (expected
that).

I am happy to invite someone in via "support" to look around my system if it
would do any good... (don't know how that will work with my Internet
sharing/firewall)

It is not the applications...

ANY program, including Microsoft's, that try to open a "browse/save as"
window crash. I really really don't want to reload...thats a several day
affair...

Only exception I have found is OUTLOOK, but then outlook was always weird...
