Saitek gamepad / Need for Speed

I have a Saitek P880 gamepad that I have been unable to get to work with Need for Speed Underground. The Control Panel says the device exists, and it is calibrated, but you can't assign buttons to actions in the game. Odd thing is, it worked before I reformatted the hard drive and re-installed applications as part of a maintenance routine

Anyone else have this problem?
