Sidewinder Gamepad (non-usb) with Windows XP

Guys, I found my old Sidewinder Gamepads that I used to play Need for
Speed III on Windows 98. These devices never came with a USB adapter,
so I used the adapter that came with my Microsoft Precision Pro
Joystick to plug it into a USB. I already tried removing static, but
that didn't seem to work. Is it possible to use the USB adapter that
came with my other Microsoft Joystick to use with these Gamepads? If
not, if I get a game port installed directly in my computer, will these
out-of-date controllers still work on windows XP? Thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot for the forum, Barry, it really helped, but at the end of
it, he is talking as if the controllers work on his new computer if he
installs the old sound card on it. Is this true? Can't he just get an
adapter for your computer so that you can plug in the gamepad directly
and not have the sound?
