Gamepad disappeared

I'm having a problem right here: I have 2 Gravis Game Pad Pro gamepads
(regular, not USB), but I usually only keep the first one connected since my
system is becoming choppy when both are connected. Usually, when I connect
the second one, Windows (XP) recognizes it as the second gamepad, and simply
lists it in the Game Controllers control panel as being "OK". Then I can
unplug it and plug it back later and Windows will still recognize it as the
same gamepad. However, yesterday, I connected it (the second one), and I
had a PnP message saying "New hardware had been found", and so Windows
installed the appropriate Game Pad Pro driver, something that never happens
normally, because I always plug in the same additional gamepad. So I tried
to play a game but only my first gamepad worked; I then looked at the
control panel's Game Controllers only to find out that 3 (!) Game Pad Pros
were listed as "OK", even if only 2 were connected. I clicked on
"Properties" to find out which was the first, and as I expected, the buttons
on the first pad responded. Same thing for the second one listed, whose
buttons would not respond: the first one's buttons did respond, though.
Just as if the first pad was listed twice. I then tried to click on
"Properties" for the third pad, but couldn't see the appropriate window, as
it kept on disappearing right after popping up. What I did is I deleted the
second pad (because I thought it was a duplicate of the first one), and then
both of my gamepads disappeared in the "Game Controllers" control panel. I
thought rebooting would make Windows redetect the gamepad(s), but it didn't.
Same when I turned my computer back on this morning: nothing. Just in case
one might wonder: yes, my gameport is listed in the "Hardware" section. I
desperately need help on this one, as it has never happened before (maybe it
is because of the fact that I recently installed Gravis Xperience (a week
ago) to use keyboard emulation in one of my games and it was the first time
I plugged in the second pad since installing it. Who knows?) I thought
about going into the registry and deleting every Gravis Game Pad Pro entry I
could find, except for the entry where all Windows-recognized gamepads are
listed. However, I'm not sure this wouldn't screw up something so I'd
rather ask first. Any ideas? Thanks you very very very very much!!

This time, rather than just skipping, I only skipped reading.
Nobody wants to look at a solid mass of letters. That's what
paragraphs are for. They separate thoughts, etc.

Wow...I wasn't writing a novel anyway, it's not like it was ridiculously
long, and the text is the same but anyway I won't complain so if that's how
you want it, here's something to make you happier:

Thank you. That's an order of magnitude better. Having now read
it I can say I don't have any help for you, but at least we both
know it. Somebody else is quite likely to have something pertinent
to say.
