safely remove hardware

The safely remove hardware icon is no longer in my taskbar. At the same
time this went missing I became no longer able to access my flashdrive in
any of the USB ports. I'm assuming there must be some connection between
the two since I always used this to remove the flashdrive before. Any help
with this will be greatly appreciated.

The safely remove hardware icon is no longer in my taskbar. At the

flashdrive before.

If the flash drive doesn't appear in Device Manager and in My Computer,
the safely remove hardware icon does not appear either. Create a new
desktop shortcut to (or enter at Start > Run):

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

and you'll see that there are no devices to be removed unless the
original problem with your flash drive has been resolved.
