Flash Drive Problem

Purchased a 16 GB flashdrive from the internet ( Ebay). Worked at first, but
my hard drive crashed and I had to reload everything. Everything works with
the exception of this flash drive. I have another 16 GB that works fine. This
one doesn't. When I put it in the USB port, it show up as a drive in my
computer. When I try to read from it, I get the error message that there is
no disc in the drive. Any hints???
Tried Rebooting with the flashdrive in a front usb port. No different. Tried
putting it in a high speed port in the back. Same thing. Can't format,
because it looks for a disc to be in the drive all of the time. Running
windows XP. 233 speed and 2 ghd memory.

Stumped in chitown.....

Try this flash drive on a different PC. You may be unlucky and this
flash drive also crashed.

Flash drives have a tendency to suddenly, permanently, and irrevocably fail.
Some do it sooner than others. For this reason, these drives should never
be used for backup, only for convenient transfer of files you have
elsewhere.

Try the drive on another PC. If it doesn't work there, consider it
damaged and dispose of it.

If you need a fake USB flash drive, Ebay is where to shop for it.

Any piece of hardware works until it stops working.
Sorry, but that's the way it is. Many things work,
and are very useful. But don't EVER put your total
trust in one of them. Find something almost totally
trustworthy, by all means, and work with it. But
always have a backup. Today, I found a bad spot
in one of my removable drives that crapped up a
backup of my C: drive. Okay, but the preceding
and following backups on that drive work fine, and
so does the backup to a secured zone on my hard
drive. If the hard drive of my system unit buys the
farm tonight, I'll have _something_ to use, even if
it isn't the ideal solution.

Try the drive in another computer. If the result is the same, then the
FLASH memory chip has failed. They are limited life items and it is not
clear whether yours was new or used.

This is a known failure mode.
