Safe Mode

Can anyone please tell me how to start my pc in safe mode? I have tried doing
what it says on the Windows Help Menu (Restart pc then hit F8), but this just
brings me to a screen about booting options, with no sign of safe mode. I'm
running Windows Xp on a Packard Bell. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have not been so lucky, while the computer starts in safe mode there are no
icons and starting in safe mode w/ command propmt and trying to start exporer
does not work either. A pop-up show for a second saying it is running in
safe mode then disappears. Is explorer.exe not the right program to display
icons?

FWIW I do find it odd that the MS and Symantec instructions are so
different. In fact the MS instructions don't even match what's on my machine
when I click on Start to try to get into Safe Mode. That was probably Kevin's
problem too, from the sound of it.
